In Your Box This Week: [Including 5 new crops — welcome to the variety of mid-summer!]
1. Green & Yellow Beans!—raw or cooked, yum!
2. Basil!—it got sandy during the storm, so we had to wash it. It will store longest if it is dry, so please double check it. (Wet spots will turn black first.)
3. Kohlrabi!—this space ship with leaves is the stem of the plant. It has more vitamin C than an orange! You can eat the leaves too, treat them like kale. Eat the round part raw or cooked.
4. Hot Pepper!
5. Zucchini!—the first of the year is always the most appreciated! Eat them raw, sautéed, baked, fried.
6. Hakurei Turnips—eat the sweet mild roots & the greens raw or cooked. The leaves will store longer if you cut them off the roots.
7. Radishes—treat them like the turnips, just spicier.
8. Green Onions—the continued thinnings of our regular big onions. We will continue to do this for at least 1 more week.
9. Lettuce Mix—washed twice, ready for your bowl.
10. Arugula—Arugula is a spicy green that you can eat raw or cooked. Washed twice, but you may want to check it and wash it again.
11. Garlic Chives—cut up these green leaves and throw in raw or cooked to add garlic flavor to anything.
12. Chamomile—part of your job this week is to relax with a cup of hot or iced tea—just add the flower heads to hot water and steep.
We had a storm blow through on Saturday afternoon that left us with some hail damage and lots of sand splashed up onto the plants, so you may notice some quality loss until the plants recover a bit. Also, please excuse the broken Zucchini necks, our pickers are still working on their technique (after 40+ years practice)!
